Ricardo Usbeck // Principal Researcher

Ricardo is a professor of AI, but he much prefers playing with technology and is interested in everything from simple everyday conveniences to deeply moving art installations—interestingly, also involving AI.

Ricardo Usbeck studied computer science (B.Sc., M.Sc.) at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. He then moved to Leipzig, where he earned his doctorate in data extraction and search engines in 2017. Until 2019, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Paderborn in the Data Science Group. He then became team leader at the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems. In 2021, he took over the junior professorship for Semantic Systems at the University of Hamburg. In 2023, he was appointed professor of business informatics, specializing in artificial intelligence and explainability, at Leuphana University LĂĽneburg. He works on and leads several national and international research projects on knowledge graphs, large language models, chatbots, and AI for social purposes. He is interested in transformation-related areas such as sustainability and creative spaces for technology. Ricardo Usbeck seeks to bridge the gap between research and application.
